If you’ve been reading and following along with my emails, then congratulations! You’ve learned about 90% of the VLM carpet cleaning process at this point.

But there is still 1 critical step left… and unfortunately a lot of rookie carpet cleaners skip this step.

What am I talking about?

Raking the carpet.

Now… a lot of people get confused when I say “you’ve gotta rake the carpet” but stick with me!

Go buy this under $50 tool called the Grandi Groom carpet rake.

The Grandi Groom is a wood handled tool with a plastic rake head on the bottom. The head has nylon bristles you can use to “groom” the carpet after you’ve finished cleaning.

Why would you groom or rake the carpet?

Because VLM carpet cleaning leaves a lot of swirl marks on the carpet. Just look at this:

If you want to leave your customers angry and upset that they hired you, then leave your carpets looking just like that and walk out the door.

“Good luck with the swirls! I’m sure they’ll come out with regular vacuuming. BYE” << Don’t be that cleaner. You’re better than that.

After you buff the carpet to your professional satisfaction, removing all the soil & stains your customers hated, whip out your Grandi Groom carpet rake.

Begin raking the carpet on the far side of the house and work your way out the front door. Rake all your foot steps out of the carpet. Rake everything into a nice smooth pattern like this:

Reminder: I recommend Advanced Carpet Protector by DuPont

In order to apply protector on your customers’ carpet, you’ll need:
-Some carpet fabric protector
-A non-aerosol sprayer like this one from Vaper
-A small air compressor like this one from Craftsman

Fill the canister with carpet protector, screw the lid on, pressurize it with your compressor, then spray the protector in a fine mist over the entire room of carpet.

Then use a carpet rake to spread the protector evenly across the carpet. (don’t worry – we’ll talk about “carpet rakes” in an upcoming email)

If you’re going to start a carpet cleaning business, eventually you’ll run into some pet stains. In fact, pet stains and odor are probably the #1 reason customers get their carpets cleaned.

If you don’t have a good pet treatment to get those stains and smells out, you’re dead in the water.
